Whatever Floats Your Boat - Rang a Dó B
Today, we looked at floating and what effect shape has on how objects float. We spoke about water displacement, density, shape and how we can make things float.
We prepared all the things we needed for our experiment.
Firstly, all the groups rolled Blutac in a tight ball and carefully left it into the bowl of water. They all sank.
Then, we shaped the Blutac into bowl shapes and carefully placed them into the water. Again, they all sank.
We then spoke about why this didn't work and what we needed to do to get them to float. After much moulding and shaping, success. Different groups began to get their little boats to float. This was achieved by creating as large a surface area on the bottom of the boat to spread out the boat's weight over as large an area as possible.
We now have a competition going to see which team has the best design and which boat will float for the longest time.
